I’d like to say that I’m impressed with my 1997 Suzuki Swift.

It’s the exact same car as my original fleet vehicle that was a 1992 Geo Metro. With 2 minor differences; a 4 cylinder engine and it’s 5 years newer.

The Geo gave me 285,000Km before it couldn’t be serviced any longer and I expect to get more from a 4 cylinder. I only had the Geo for 1 year in which I put it’s last 100,000Km on it.

So I’ve completed a month of testing in which I travelled to Apsley and Hamilton, to stretch the limits of my service area and I was just pleased with the drive.

I look forward to making the trip to your office today!

Every 3 months I go window shopping to see what we could have on the streets.

In this case I was browsing video cards and found That the big box stores were left wanting for something better.

A generic video card with Nvidia’s 400 GTS series chips were going for $180

That in itself is not bad for an entry level upgrade but, you’d have to find a special shop… I know of one in Whitby… In order to find the GTX series and that’s what you would look for if you were avidly gaming!

In other news, I went looking for “printability” in pad’s.

Acer has an eye catcher with a Windows based OS and would be compatible with everything but, I found the Android based tablets were only compatible if the printer is wireless and made compatible at the time of manufacture.

I was recommended to e-mail my documents to a PC if I wanted to print and I felt this industry hasn’t quite matured yet.

The other features of 1st generation hand helds, like the Palm and Blackberry, still have synchronizing features that outstretch our new pad style trend, such as directly synchronizing with Outlook and RealPlayer. The new pad’s bring their own software to synchronize with. A pet pieve of mine, that it’s an annoying attempt at keeping you on the same product as generations progress.

My hat goes off to Blackberry as RIM’s Playbook still synchronizes with Outlook.

My search continues for those shops in each area that cater to the uniqueness of all our computing needs. Watch for updates, they’re coming soon.

It’s been a bumpy road for a year and a half as we work to rebuild our company. We’ve moved a good number of times but, luckily, the nature of being a mobile technician has made the transition seamless.

With our work orders and invoices on a data stick we carry on-site, we’ve never noticed that we don’t have a formal office and the largest tool we need to execute our work is a 6 foot step ladder, everything else fits in a briefcase.

Our latest move brings us back to Oshawa, where all the excitement originally began in January 2005. After the many cracks being made about this poor town, I have to say, it feels most like home and the economy has become uniquely diversified since GM ceased to be the largest bread winner in town.

I just finished settling into my new place in time to miss this years Fiesta Week but, I’ll make a point of it next year.

My favorite Coffee Time, a place I stop on weekends just for pleasure is also a great place for me to do paper work between job sites.

I often use the voice memo feature of my Palm Zire 72 for taking contact info and driving directions. It’s a lot more convenient than hunting for a pen. When I have the luxury to stop for coffee, I transcribe those notes into the contacts list or the calendar, depending on what I was in such a rush to record.

I’ve noticed that many “Internet Café’s” have sprouted up over the years but, fail quickly. Musing that 1 day I’ll have to convince the Brechin Coffee Time owner to get a wireless router and Internet connection so my Palm Pilot can do this paper work automatically… Wi-Fi hotspots are a better marketing plan than outright venue change.

A good number of business models would fit the Wi-Fi hotspot value addition, like Mr. Lube… What else would you do besides surf the web while you’re parked in line? Word of mouth even places these on mapped websites. When you realize the free publicity that’s generated by this inexpensive compliment to your service, call us for quick and easy installation… 905-550-2908

A little known hamlet in the woods North of Woodville, has a surprising number of businesses. Ranging from golf, bed and breakfast or horseback trail rides to custom auto racing, marine recreation and renovation/electrical trades. All of which have at least 1 need in common… Accounting!

The need for accounting is self explanatory but, what other concerns surround that need? A computer to run Quickbooks, Simply Accounting, Business Vision or some other flavor of accounting software. Recently these programs have developed to a point where the computer they run on must be at least a Pentium 4 with 1 Gigabyte of memory. I’ve tried to make Simply Accounting run with just ½ a gigabyte of memory and it just won’t start.

Accounting is the most important reason but, not the only reason for your next concern… Backup! I had a client a few years back that had to have Simply Accounting technical staff repair their data, just because a Windows Update forced a reboot while Simply Accounting was left open. That operation cost the client $300 and could have been avoided if they were doing regular backups.

Your space requirements will dictate the best backup solution for you. CD’s hold 700 megabytes of information, DVD’s hold 4.7 gigabytes. Tape drives are still in common practice and they hold more data than you are likely to ever need. My favorite solution would have to be the external USB hard disk drive. We schedule a simple copy operation of all your data onto the drive, to happen at some time when your office is closed. Swap the fresh backup drive with another drive of the same type and bring the fresh backup home in case the office burns down, you will still have your data. Repeat this process as often as you feel comfortable with on as many drives as you can budget for.

Historically, we’ve found that backups become a priority after a disaster demonstrates the need. We hope you call before that happens 905-550-2908.

As we service Lindsay and realize the large area, we also realize the large potential for data loss. If your backups are ignored or the volume of data you generate between backups will cost a significant amount of employing someone to re-enter the data since your last backup, then it might be more cost effective to send your data drive to a data recovery clinic. Data recovery clinics often start charging at over $1000.

We have the tools to recover data with less overhead which translates into less cost. As long as the drive is accessible to some degree, we can use our tools to read the lost data and transfer it to a healthy drive and the cost is, on average, ¼ of a clinic (often about $250).

When a drive loses data, it is often caused by power surges or failures that stop the drive from finishing the write operation. When this occurs, Windows doesn’t understand why the math, or the map of 1’s and 0’s doesn’t appear as it should and so Windows can’t show the data to you. Our tools ignore the math and recover the data in its raw form.

In the event of circuit burn out on a drive, it is necessary to use a clinic but, that is rare, so call us 1st and save a bundle! 905-550-2908.

The true center of our service area, Port Perry is a beautiful recreation town and in keeping with its natural beauty, we focus on aesthetics when we cable your office.

The finishing touch relies on matching face plates with your existing motif or chosing multi coloured patch cords, depending on your preference.

The tricky part can be the cable drop itself. Fishing cable through hollow office walls and over top the average drop ceiling is a dream job compared to the complex engineering involved in cabling the century home. Many offices in Port Perry are the latter.

Avoiding costly renovations during a cable job in these century homes, we employ a number of alternatives to drilling holes and other destructive methods commonly used today.

D-Link offers a device we use that turns your electrical outlets into an extension cord for your network. Simply plug 1 in downstairs and patch it into your hub, then do the same upstairs and you’ve avoided running new cables altogether.

Combining this D-link device with a wireless solution, we ensure that your entire facility is connected without clutter and renovation at all.

Call for your free site assessment today! 905-550-2908

I miss the days when general maintenance meant running Scandisk and Defrag. Such tasks would fix crashing and speed up the computer noticeably but, these days we have fast enough processors and relatively stable windows that make that process obsolete.

The average issue now becomes a matter of security, in order to keep out virus’ and other unwanted trouble makers.I would manually install the latest versions of the most commonly used free downloads, like Adobe Reader, Sun Java Virtual Machine and many others. These updates will close the holes in security that less savory Internet users will exploit to install virus and ad-ware.

If you’re anything like me then you’ve saved your e-mail since 1998 and your Outlook is running slowly for that reason. Archiving your inbox can significantly speed it up. Outlook will volunteer to archive your old items in some obscure folder of its choosing that you will never find when you need it but, the process of archiving can neatly place your old mail folder into your “Documents” folder for ease of access later on.

Many free and useful programs come with adware built in. Yahoo Messenger is 1 of the best examples; if I have Yahoo open but, not in use, I notice significant bandwidth usage anyway. Things like this prompted me to find the most efficient ways to have your cake and eat it too.Stop Messengers from loading on Start up. In like fashion, stop automatic updates from loading in the background. In my experience, I’ve seen an automatic update corrupt accounting databases because they force a reboot while the accounting software is still open. Other programs hide themselves as necessary services that constantly run in the background and cost you time, bandwidth and in the worst case, crashing.

Talk to your technician about the programs you use. I find miscellaneous programs everywhere I go and often they’re useful but, not to those people who have them installed. Lime wire is 1 that I’ve found on systems of people who never download media files, so why leave it there with all of its adware intact?

Some people also have every instant messenger on the market (I’m guilty by 1/2) I leave Yahoo disabled unless I manually start it at someone’s request. MSN and Skype run always and I stopped using ICQ a long time ago. MSN has the largest following so most people can use it on a whim and that’s what you have to consider when stripping them from your start up list.

I have a hosts file with 500 (or more) advertising sites in its list. The hosts file is checked 1st when your PC needs to know where a website is, if the intended website is in the hosts file, it will not be reachable. This process saves you from a good number of spyware attempts to break your security and saves a lot of bandwidth… Saving time and money, if you have an ISP with bandwidth caps.

There are more tricks to enhancing your PC experience but, I can’t give away all of my secrets on the 1st date!

Good night and happy surfing!
